I am a constituent of Hamble Valley.
Today, I’m emailing to tell you about the missing million – and ask you to make sure children and young people with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) aren’t overlooked in the Government’s SEND reforms.
Right now, DLD affects 1.3 million children and young people across the country. But have you ever heard of it? Hardly anyone has, including ministers, educators, and other professionals. And so, they remain underdiagnosed, underrecognised, and under-supported, denied the happy childhood that should be their right.
That’s why I’m getting in touch today to share Speech and Language UK’s new report, The missing million. They’re the largest charity in the UK that supports children with speech and language challenges, including those with DLD. And I’m standing with them to ask you to join us in calling on the Government to deliver on their promises of inclusion and opportunity for every child. We cannot let this moment pass.
The Government’s new plans to reform the SEND system are a once-in-a-generation opportunity. But right now, those plans aren’t good enough. We cannot risk children and young people with DLD being left out and left behind, yet again. Will you put them at the heart of the conversation, where they belong?
We all want an education system that tackles disadvantage early, enables children to thrive, and catches problems early. And the Government clearly knows that speech, language, and communication skills are important. But their new oracy framework, programmes like the Nuffield Early Language Intervention, and plans for new early language leads don’t go far enough. They simply won’t help the missing million with DLD.
The Government's reforms must work for all children, including those with DLD. That includes things like having experts in DLD in working groups on national inclusion standards and specialist provision packages, talking more about DLD in the new SEND training that's being created for schools, and putting clear information about conditions like DLD on the NHS website. These are just some of Speech and Language UK’s recommendations. You can read more in The missing million report.
As your constituent, I urge you to keep raising this issue in Parliament and encourage your fellow MPs to read the report. We have a responsibility to hold the Government to account and to help every child get the support they need to learn and grow. That cannot happen unless children and young people with DLD are considered from the start. Will you tell the Government to put the next generation first, Paul Holmes?
I look forward to hearing from you.
